In the latest update from the gardens of Shakespeare's family homes, apples are picked, bulbs and wallflowers are planted. Leaves turn colour and take flight, flap and twist in autumnal winds. Sunflowers take a menacing turn.

Summer was full of flip-flop days; in between the odd shower or two, deckchairs were splayed out on our lawns, their occupants dozing to the lazy drone of drunken bees.

By mid-March the gardens were blooming with daffodils. High winds blasted, twisting petals (and umbrellas) inside and out. Many flowering bulbs fell to the ground, only to bounce upright the following day – and all before the swallows appeared.
