Little Cures - Harvey Steele

Meet the artist Harvey Steele whose work forms part of our Little Cures exhibition

Harvey Steele is a lettering artist who draws inspiration from sign-painting, language and folklore. He was born in Kettering and currently lives and works in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

Q: What drives you to make your work?

A: “I draw inspiration from sign painting and subculture, combining ideas to create works that focus on folklore and the transient nature of language, using these as vehicles to explore narratives from my personal life.”

Q: Has the lockdown and pandemic changed the way you work?

A: “The lockdown has given me more time than I ever could have expected to concentrate on and develop my practise. However having too much time has sometimes been a hindrance - my work is very personal and autobiographical. After more than a year of this I think I might be spending too much time with myself!”

Q: Do you think making artwork helps your Mental Health?

A: “Making artwork definitely helps my mental health. I notice a change when I haven’t been able to make work in a while, I can get quite irritable and being in that sweet spot of subconscious creativity is extremely beneficial to my mental state.”
