"A House for All Time" Campaign : Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs for our fundraising campaign "A House for All Time" - Hall's Croft
Why is this work so urgent?
Hall's Croft faces significant structural and conservation challenges, including timber decay, moisture-related deterioration and impact of previous repairs. Delaying action increases risk to the building and the cost of future conservation.
Can international supporters donate?
Yes - international donations are welcome, and US donors can give tax-effectively via Shakespeare’s Birthplace America (SBA).
Will donors be recognised?
Yes. All donors will receive appropriate recognition unless they choose to remain anonymous.
Why doesn’t the driver’s insurance cover the costs?
Insurance will cover the immediate costs of securing the building and repairing the direct damage caused. It does not cover the wider, urgent conservation work already needed on the south-east and south-west elevations - which this campaign will help to fund.
Why isn’t SBT funding this from its operating budget?
Like all heritage charities, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust relies on a combination of earned income, grants, philanthropy and public support. While visitor income helps fund day-to-day operations, major conservation projects require additional investment from donors, trusts and funding partners.
Why is Hall's Croft on Historic England's Heritage At Risk Register ?
Hall's Croft was added to Historic England's Heritage At Risk Register in 2026 because of the significant conservation challenges affecting this nationally important building. The Register highlights heritage assets most at risk and helps focus attention, expertise and investment on securing their long-term future.
What will my donation support ?
Donations support the conservation of Hall's Croft, including specialist investigations, traditional craft skills, structural repairs and the protection of the building's historic fabric for future generations.
Is Hall's Croft open to visitors ?
Hall's Croft is currently closed to general admission while conservation works are undertaken. Throughout this project, we are creating opportunities for the public to engage with the conservation programme through tours, events and learning activities.
How much will the conservation programme cost ?
Hall's Croft requires a significant multi-year programme of conservation and repair. The current campaign is helping to fund the next stage of work, alongside support from trusts, foundations, public funders and major donors.
Can I leave a gift in my Will to support Hall's Croft ?
yes: Gifts in Wills play an important role in helping us case for Shakespeare's heritage sites for future generations. Please contact our Development Team if you would like to discuss leaving a legacy gift.
