Behind the scenes: Play pennants

Behind-the-scenes access in the run up to the grand opening of Shakespeare's New Place in Summer 2016.

A figure draws aside a curtain to reveal a golden ball on a steel shaft, and a red pennant bearing the legend Two Gentlemen of Verona in gold.

It’s thought that Shakespeare wrote around 26 plays while in residence at New Place. This behind-the-scenes preview shows just one of the ways in which the site celebrates Shakespeare’s works.

38 permanent pennants will be planted in the flowerbeds of the Golden Garden: one for each play. They will rise up above the flowers in a delicate forest. In the photograph here you can see the design, created by Simon Kenny of Souvenir Studios. Kind supporters of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust have sponsored their favourite play, and you too can leave a lasting legacy.
