From Kaufman to Topsell’s Four-footed Beasts and Serpents

Join us on the weekend of 24th and 25th November for Museum Shop Sunday

Adam Sherratt

Museum Shop Sunday celebrates non-profit venues, helps to showcase products and puts cultural shops in the spotlight.

We are hosting events over two days, at Shakespeare’s New Place and Shakespeare's Birthplace to share some of our rare and precious objects from our collections.

Shakespeare’s New Place

At Shakespeare’s New Place we are celebrating Steve Kaufman’s stunning screen print portrait which has been on permanent display here since 2016. If you haven’t seen it yet it is definitely worth a visit.

Steve Kaufman (1960-2010) was former assistant to Andy Warhol. He advanced the use of silkscreen printing and was most widely recognised for his use of bright colours and hand finished decoration. Like Andy Warhol, he painted famous figures from history and popular culture. ‘Shakespeare State Two’ is based on the engraving in the First Folio of 1623.

Over the weekend we are encouraging visitors to be inspired by the original and create their own Shakespeare Pop Art to share online.

Shakespeare’s Birthplace

At the Birthplace shop and in the ‘Famous Beyond Words’ exhibition we’ll be bringing items from our collections into the shop and connecting some of our favourite gift items with the books and museum objects that inspired them. Highlights include the recently restored The History of Four-footed Beasts and Serpents by Edward Topsell and, on Sunday, our exquisite Gentleman's Nightcap - the inspiration for our bestselling gift range and Penguin editions.
