Exploring the roles of women across all backgrounds and how expectations of them differed during the various stages of life.
For our second After Hours talk in our series at Shakespeare's New Place, Amy McElroy will be discussing her new book Women’s Lives in the Tudor Era, providing an introduction to the roles of women in the Tudor period across all social backgrounds and how expectations of them differed during the various stages of life.
In this fascinating talk she will explore the expectations and influence of daughters, mothers, wives, and widows in Tudor society and how they were expected to be obedient to the man of the household.
Many opportunities, including much formal education and professions, were closed to women, their early years spent imitating their mothers before learning to run a household in preparation for marriage. Once married, their responsibilities would vary greatly according to their social status and rank. Widowhood left some in vulnerable conditions, while for others, it enabled them to make a life for themselves and become independent in a largely patriarchal society.
A question and answer discussion will follow the author talk.
Included in this event is exclusive access to our new exhibition, Hidden Voices: The Women Who Made Shakespeare, which you can explore at your leisure as part of your evening.
