New Place Project Update, April 2016

New Place Under Construction, In the foreground are some of the tall hornbeams, with their branches fixed to a wooden frame between them . Another part of this screen is shown in the background. In between is some sort of yellow mechanical digger.

New Place is, of course, a Registered Park and Garden. For many months we have been installing foundations and ground works which feels as far cry from creating a beautiful green space. It was with some relief then that our first bit of greenery arrived on site this week. 26 semi-mature pleached hornbeams were delivered in a large lorry which took an entire day to unload carefully. It then took another two days to plant by Jill Houghton and her team. The root balls were carefully braced beneath the ground to keep them securely in place whilst the root systems grow. The hornbeams will form a circle around the heart of the house.

Trees arrive at New Place. The photograph shows part of a lorry with its side panels removed to allow the unloading of a number of trees with large root-balls wrapped in netting.
