New Place Bench Design

Our Project Manager Julie Crawshaw nipped down to visit our bench designer Armando Magnino last week at his studio in Warwick

In the workshop, with tools and materials on shelves and workbenches, both men are looking at the curved run of seating benches, at this stage just frames with no seats.

Armando, along with his colleague Phillip, are creating all of our seating for the New Place garden.  The benches are to provide a comfortable 13 metre radius viewing platform around our main sculpture in the New Place garden, His Mind’s Eye; a five metre tall bronze tree.

The benches are an artwork in their own right.

Designed by Armando and Tim O’Brien from Expedition, they wanted to create something which was “an iconic design that balanced modernity and tradition, solidity and lightness, whilst still being able to withstand the day to day hustle and bustle of a popular heritage attraction”.

We can’t wait to see the benches completed and in place on site, we just hope that until then Armando has enough space to carry on building them in his workshop!

For more information on the New Place Project, please keep checking out blog for up to date back stage news.

Outside the workshop one of the benches, in light-coloured wood, is shown with its plank seating and the many thin vertical laths at the back.
