Tudor Hand Fasting Festival

May Bank Holiday

Watch a traditional Tudor hand fasting ceremony.

Join the celebrations at our traditional hand fasting festival. Learn about this beautiful ceremony, a type of Tudor pre-wedding, as you watch a hand fasting take place between our happy Tudor couple. Make a flower head garland or green man mask and enjoy the festival atmosphere, with Tudor music, dancing and feasting!

Tudor couples often entered into a hand fasting as a way of pledging a commitment to each other in advance of an official wedding ceremony. Come and find out more about the traditions that were upheld at a hand fasting, such as the exchange of symbolic gifts, jumping over a 'cleansing fire' and having your hands tied together - where the phrase “tying the knot” comes from!

This event is included in admission.
