Celebrating the past, preserving the present and looking towards the future
The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is joining OUTing the Past Festival as a hub for the third time to celebrate LGBT+ History Month 2022.
OUTing the Past is a celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans history that gathers people together throughout the year to discuss the past, preserve the present, and look towards the future.
This year our digital event features a series of short talks from academics and artists, who will share their research and creative practice when uncovering and celebrating LGBT+ history.
This free event is open to all and takes place on 17 February from 4 - 6pm.
Proud Shakespeare and the LGBTQ+ Lived Experience
4 - 4.30pm
Learn what the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is doing to work with and learn from the LGBTQ+ community.
Join SBT Collections Archivist Jim Ranahan (he/him) and No Barriers trainee Jessica Whitfield (she/her) as they highlight the Trust's 'Proud Shakespeare' programme, an initiative which shares and celebrates the lived experience of LGBTQ+ people, both historic and contemporary.
A captioned version of the presentation will be available online after the event.
Girls on Stage
4.30 - 5pm
What does gender play mean to audiences, and to young actors made famous for portraying beautiful women?
Join Cheryl Morgan (she/her) as she explores the complexities of this theatrical tradition, which existed throughout centuries and across many cultures. This presentation shares the latest tantalising research into the adult lives of Shakespeare's 'boy' actors.
Please note this presentation will not be available online after the event.
Shake Up! LGBT+ Remix
5.10 - 6pm
A showcase from 1623 Theatre Company
What happens when a fabulous group of LGBT+ theatre makers mix together autobiography, experiences of social in/justice, and Shakespeare?
You get Shake Up! LGBT+ Remix – a cocktail of thoughtful, sassy and moving short videos by Edalia Day, Karen Spicer, JD Stewart and Sam Beckett Jr. Join the artists as share their videos and invite you to chat about them, before taking part in a fun creative activity.
The chat and creative activity with the artists are both BSL-interpreted. Captioned and audio described versions of the videos and the presentation will be available online after the event.
OUTing The Past is an international celebration of LGBT+ history that takes place throughout the year, and across the world. The UK events take place mainly in February (LGBT History Month UK).
All events are FREE to join and will be streamed live, online on 17 February 2022.
