The Gift of Learning

We are determined that no child should be excluded from the benefits of an early encounter with Shakespeare

Shakespeare changes lives for the better, and with your help even more young people can participate in our educational activities and enjoy lasting benefits.

Your donation of as little as £15 can transform a life.

Evidence collected from around the world shows that:

  1. Participation in structured arts activities can increase cognitive abilities by 17%
  2. Learning through arts and culture develops skills and behaviour that lead children to do better in school
  3. Students from low-income families who take part in arts activities at school are three times more likely to get a degree
  4. Participating in structured arts activities leads to increases in transferable skills (including confidence and communication) of between 10–17%
  5. People who take part in the arts are 38% more likely to report good health

Too many children miss out on these opportunities – but you can make a difference

Last year, thanks to donations from Friends, the Year-6 class from Acocks Green Primary School in Birmingham enjoyed our day-long workshop “Getting to know Will” – without this generous funding they would not have been able to take part.

The session captured the children’s imaginations as they discovered what life was like for William Shakespeare as a schoolboy, actor and playwright. Using clues from our collections, including original documents, artefacts and portraits, as well as the historic houses, the children became history detectives as they pieced together evidence to find out about William.

Hands-on activities such as learning to write with a quill pen really brought the past to life, and it was great to see the children engaging with the Trust’s treasures in a fun and educational manner. As one child said of the day:

‘It was amazing and I loved absolutely everything about it!’

You can help another primary school child to get a better start in life, developing lifelong skills and a love of learning with a donation of as little as £15.  Please donate.
