Response to Covid-19

We can’t welcome you in person right now but our virtual doors are wide open

We are sorry that all five of Shakespeare’s family homes and the Shakespeare Centre in Stratford-upon-Avon are closed until further notice. 

The health and wellbeing of our visitors, staff and volunteers is our first priority and we hope you understand that we have taken this step to help combat the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.

We look forward to welcoming you at our sites again soon, and we will let you know about our plans for reopening as soon as we can.  In the meantime we’re exploring more ways for visitors to enjoy our wonderful houses and collections in a digital space. There are lots of ways for you to encounter Shakespeare with us online already through our online exhibitionsblogs, our online encyclopediaShakespeare Week activities for children, as well as our social media accounts FacebookTwitter and Instagram.

The decision to close our doors and play our part in containing the virus poses a significant financial challenge for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.  As the independent charity dedicated to sharing Shakespeare’s works, life and times with the world, we  rely on the support of visitors, donors, volunteers and Friends for 98% of our income to help conserve the priceless Shakespearian heritage in our care. The majority is generated by visitors between April and September. Our income for the year is now at risk.

The historic homes and collections in our care have withstood the storms of five centuries, but we need your support now more than ever to ensure they do so again. While we are closed, we still face essential costs to keep the world’s richest Shakespearian heritage in Stratford-upon-Avon safe and in good repair, ready to inspire the world afresh with our playwright’s timeless stories. Please support us if you possibly can.

We are very grateful for every donation, large or small. 

We offer full refunds to anyone who has pre-booked experiences or events with us.  You can find refund information here.  If you have pre-booked tickets to visit the houses, we’d like to reassure you that they are valid for 12 months from the day of your first visit and not when the booking was made.  Of course, if you wish your ticket price to be used as a donation, we’d be very grateful.
