Winter Demonstrations ![]()
Please find below a list of the demonstrations you can expect to see at Mary Arden's Farm during the winter. Each activity lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, and begin at approximately 11.00am and 2.30pm daily.
Monday
- The men take part in hurdle-making (gate or wattle), or making up wattle fences
- For the women the first Monday of each month is wash-day, and then every third Monday
Tuesday
- Watch the men making candles or ploughing
- For the women Tuesday is all about the 'Tudor Toilet': dressing hair and cleanliness
Wednesday
- The men will be clearing and weeding the garden plot, and sowing or planting in the garden and fields
- Each Wednesday the women have a different activity: (in order) Blackwork, using a lucet, hand-spinning and on the 4th Weds of the month using an ankle loom. In addition maids will be mending and darning clothes.
Thursday
- Palmer's Farm men split timber using a brake and froe on a winter Thursday
- The womens' task is to preserve food
Friday
- For the men Friday is tree pruning day
- and for the women it's baking day
Saturday
- The men demonstrate oxen working
- The women take part in pie making (also know as 'coffin making'!)
Sunday
- The men tell stories
- The women make a roast dinner
- Everyone indulges in games and tricks in the afternoon next season >
