Spring demonstrations ![]()
Please find below a list of the demonstrations you can expect to see at Mary Arden's Farm during the spring. Each activity lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, and begin at approximately 11.00am and 2.30pm daily.
Monday
- For the men Monday is the day of working with oxen
- On spring Mondays the women have wash day, but also take part in making a pottage in early spring and a sallet in late spring
Tuesday
- The men take part in grafting fruit trees
- The women in March and early April do the big Spring Clean, and in late spring they milk the cows and make butter in the morning
Wednesday
- In late spring the men sow in the fields, eg buckwheat
- In early spring the women homemake medicine, and in late spring they take part in milking and cheese making in the morning
Thursday
- On Thursday in the spring the men are 'folding sheep'!
- The women are sowing and setting in the pottager
Friday
- The men have the unpleasant task of making the privie
- Whereas for the women it is Baking Day throughout the year
Saturday
- The men demonstrate bird scaring and 'broadcasting' - join in!
- The women, on the other hand teach and learn about manners and etiquette and/or 'Naughtie Words'
Sunday
- On a spring Sunday the men take part in archery practice
- The women look after the farmyard livestock
