Folklore of Plants

Folklore played an important role in history and there are many references by Shakespeare of the folklore and history of flora and fauna.

Borage (Borago officinalis)
Also known as 'Herb of Gladness', borage was traditionally thought to dispel melancholy and give courage, 'I, Borage, bring always courage'. The flowers were added to the final stirrup cup to those leaving to fight in the Crusades. Flowers and young leaves are added to salads and drinks. Plant near strawberries as they stimulate each other's growth.

Heartsease (Viola tricolor)
A common wild flower of the day; has been known by many names over the past 400 years: Love-in-Idleness, Kiss-her-in-the-Buttery, Herb Trinity. In the Taming of the Shrew, Luciento says, 'But see, while idly I stood looking on, I found the effect of love in idleness', alluding to its qualities in stimulating love. An infusion of the flowers has long been prescribed for a broken heart. Herbalists used it to treat rheumatoid arthritis and respiratory orders.

Houseleek (Sempervivum tectorum)
Folkname: ' Welcome-Home-Husband-However-Drunk-He-Be'. This refers to the plant being traditionally grown on the roofs to protect houses from lightening. May relieve burns, bites and stings, and infused as a tea may help treat septic throats and bronchitis.
