The Royal Shakespeare Company originally produced a version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, adapted by Christopher Hampton, in September 1985, starring Lindsay Duncan, Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson, directed by Howard Davies. Enormously successful from the start the production transferred to the Pit in London and from there to the Ambassadors Theatre in London where it ran until June 1990, with many changes of cast. The production then went on UK tour during 1990-91. Other tours followed, to UK venues in 1991-2 and again, in association with Theatr Clwyd in 1993, to Europe in 1994, and finally in March 1995 to Johannesburg, the RSC's first visit to South Africa. Although many aspects of the production remained intact tours were redirected by a number of directors including David Levaux, Stephen Dobbin, Michael Attenborough and Polly Irvin. More details, including cast lists, are available on the RSC Performance Database which can be accessed from the Library and Archives section. The screenplay for the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons was also written by Christopher Hampton following the success of the stage play. |
