Have all of Shakespeare's History plays ever been performed in sequence? PDF Print E-mail

Shakespeare wrote ten English History plays. In historical order these are: King John, Richard II, Henry IV parts 1 and 2, Henry V, Henry VI parts 1,2 and 3, Richard III and Henry VIII. Edward III has only recently been acknowledged as largely by Shakespeare, and does not features in any of the cycles. The following list includes performances by the RSC and other companies:

  • 1906. Shakespeare Memorial Theatre. The Benson Company staged a history cycle in Stratford-upon-Avon consisting of all the plays from Richard II to Richard III with the exception of Henry IV Part 1. They were played in sequence over a week. It's thought that this was the first time all three Henry VI plays had been performed since Shakespeare's time.
  • 1923. The London Old Vic, under Robert Atkins, performed the cycle from Henry IV to Richard III
  • 1935. The Pasadena Community Playhouse in California, USA, performed all the plays in sequence from Richard II to Richard III. Each one was performed for a few days in sequence, so only one play was performed at a time.
  • 1951. Shakespeare Memorial Theatre. History cycle of plays from Richard II to Henry V. A single stage set was designed for the whole cycle.
  • 1963-4 RSC. The Wars of the Roses and History Cycle. All the plays from Richard II to Richard III, but the three Henry VI plays conflated into two.
  • 1975-81.RSC. In 1975-6 Henry IV and Henry V played as a cycle, then in 1977-8 Henry V played with the three parts of Henry VI. In 1980-81 the same creative team and leading actor produced Richard II and Richard III.
  • 1986-89. English Shakespeare Company. The Wars of the Roses. All the plays from Richard II to Richard III, but the three parts of Henry VI conflated into two.
  • 1988-9. RSC. The Plantagenets. Henry VI and Richard III conflated into three plays.
  • 2000-2001. RSC. This England. All plays from Richard II to Richard III, performed in full, in Stratford and London. In London it was possible to see all plays performed in sequence over a week or so in three different theatres.
  • 2007.  The RSC are performing all the production of the history plays seen at the Complete Works Festival throughout 2006/7 in sequence, in the autumn of this year.
