Shakespeare's Birthday Performance has been mentioned in RSC brochures. What is the history of this? PDF Print E-mail

There has been a performance, designated the Shakespeare Birthday performance, every year since the opening of the first Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in 1879. Originally it was the performance on 23rd April, Shakespeare's Birthday, but now the celebrations of his birthday take place over a weekend the Saturday evening performance is the one designated. The distinguished guests who take part in the rest of the Birthday Celebrations also attend this performance as do many of the participants in the Celebrations.
