The First SMT:

1.The gargoyles on the outside of the first Shakespeare Memorial Theatre's library and art gallery building were carved by G.W. Seale sculptor of London. The gargoyles represent characters in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream': By the entrance door (top )- Moonshine with his bush and lantern, (middle) - Puck carrying an ass's head, (lower) - Snug the Joiner in his Lion-skin costume. Under the Oriel window on the Bancroft Gardens end of the Gallery are Peasblossom, Cobweb, Moth and Mustardseed; over the Reading Room doorway, by the Turret opposite Chapel Lane, is a winged horse.
2. The statue known as the Gower Memorial, depicting Shakespeare seated above four figures of Falstaff, Prince Hal, Lady Macbeth and Hamlet was created by Lord Ronald Sutherland Gower and was unveiled in the first Shakespeare Memorial Theatre's gardens, in the presence of Oscar Wilde, in 1888. The whole sculpture group was moved to its present position beside the canal basin of the Bancroft Gardens in June 1933.
3. The Terracotta panels on the Southern Lane side of the Gallery/Swan Theatre building are by Paul Kummer and depict: 'As You Like It'(Comedy), 'King John' (History), and 'Hamlet' (Tragedy). 'King John' was paid for by the theatre's architect W.F. Unsworth, the other two were paid for by the actress Mary Anderson out of her fee for a benefit performance in 1885.

The new SMT 1932:

1. Eric Kennington (1888-1960) carved the 'emotions' in Shakespeare's plays on the façade above the Dress Circle foyer windows of RST in 1931-2. These are 'Treachery', 'Jollity', 'Martial Ardour', 'Love' and 'Life Triumphing over Death'. They were carved in brick in situe in 1931/2. Eric Kennington also painted a ceiling above the loggia alongside the river in 1932. This was lost during the 1951 alterations.
2. Gertrude Hermes (1901-1983) created the Fountain, including its mosaic of the masks of comedy and tragedy, and the 'swan' door handles into the Ground-Floor bar.
3. Timber inlay work on the doors to the Restaurant, leading from the marble spiral staircase was created by craftsmen of John P.White and Sons.
4. Interior decoration in 1932 was designed by Walpole Champneys.
5. The spiral staircase leading from the foyer and 'fountain' court to the Dress Circle foyer was designed by architect John C. Shepherd.
