The First SMT: 1.The gargoyles on the outside of the first Shakespeare Memorial Theatre's library and art gallery building were carved by G.W. Seale sculptor of London. The gargoyles represent characters in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream': By the entrance door (top )- Moonshine with his bush and lantern, (middle) - Puck carrying an ass's head, (lower) - Snug the Joiner in his Lion-skin costume. Under the Oriel window on the Bancroft Gardens end of the Gallery are Peasblossom, Cobweb, Moth and Mustardseed; over the Reading Room doorway, by the Turret opposite Chapel Lane, is a winged horse. The new SMT 1932: 1. Eric Kennington (1888-1960) carved the 'emotions' in Shakespeare's plays on the façade above the Dress Circle foyer windows of RST in 1931-2. These are 'Treachery', 'Jollity', 'Martial Ardour', 'Love' and 'Life Triumphing over Death'. They were carved in brick in situe in 1931/2. Eric Kennington also painted a ceiling above the loggia alongside the river in 1932. This was lost during the 1951 alterations. |
