First indications of the fire were seen on the afternoon of 6 March 1926, at around 2.45pm, when smoke was observed rising from the roof of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre. Despite the gallant efforts of fire crews from several counties, by early evening the theatre had geen gutted. The Library and Picture Gallery, now the foyer of the Swan Theatre, however, remained intact. |
