How did they create sound effects at the Globe theatre in Shakespeare's day? PDF Print E-mail

Fireworks of various kinds, trumpet calls, breaking timber and other objects were used for the noise of battle scenes. A cannon was fired at the Globe for the death of Hamlet and during the production of 'Henry VIII' (this resulted in the burning down of the theatre). The sound of a storm could be created by: fireworks for lightening flashes, drums for thunder and wind instruments for howling gales. The sound of thunder was also replicated by rolling a canon ball in a wooden trough. Large bells were also common in theatres. By blowing through a pipe into a pot of water the Elizabethans produced a warbling note that mimicked bird song.
