The first film of a Shakespeare play is considered to be King John. In 1899, Herbert Beerbohm Tree filmed four scenes from his stage production performed at Her Majesty's Theatre, London. These scenes were filmed on the Thames Embankment close to the Tivoli Theatre. The four scenes filmed were: King John encouraging Hubert to kill Arthur; Queen Constance lamenting in the French King's tent; the death agony of King John; and the crowning of his successor Henry. Each scene was taken in a single shot and the entire film lasted about four minutes. The film was premiered on the same night as the play, 20 September 1899. Today, only a one minute fragment remains - the death agonies of King John (played by Beerbohm Tree).
