Into what categories are Shakespeare's plays divided? PDF Print E-mail

In the first Folio of 1623, the earliest collected edition of Shakespeare's plays, they are divided into Comedies, Histories and Tragedies. In the twentieth century these have been further subdivided into romances which include The Tempest, The Winter's Tale (by the First Folio division these were comedies), Cymbeline (a First Folio tragedy) and Pericles (not printed in the First Folio) and "problem plays" to cover Measure for Measure and All's Well that Ends Well (First Folio comedies) and Troilus and Cressida (omitted from the First Folio contents page).
