How much did it cost to go to the theatre in Shakespeare's day? PDF Print E-mail

Prices varied depending on the type of seats.  For example, at the Globe, the audience was divided into the 'groundlings' (who stood in the orchestra area) who paid 1 penny, the gentry (lesser gentlemen, professionals etc) who paid 2 or 3 pence to sit in the galleries and the nobility who sat on the stage itself or in rooms costing 12 pence.  Indoor playhouses charged more - the cheapest seat in Blackfriars Theatre was sixpence.  Open-air theatre were therefore accessible for the vast majority of people.
