The House Hall's Croft was home to Shakespeare's eldest daughter Susanna and her esteemed husband Dr John Hall before they moved to New Place on Shakespeare's death. Built in 1613 it is an impressive piece of architecture reflecting the Hall's comparative wealth and status, the displays inside the house also reflect this. Most of the furniture dates from the first half of the 17th century and includes many rare and exquisite pieces. There are also several 17th century portraits depicting families and individuals of similar wealth, a fascinating insight into the lives of the Halls. Exhibitions On the upper floor there is an exhibition depicting John Hall's life and aspects of medicine in his time. Much is known of John Hall and his medical practice in Stratford, making him one of the best-documented provincial doctors of early modern England. See the gruesome implements of his age! Downstairs a display depicts a typical 17th century consulting room, with original ointment jars and a facsimile of John Hall's medical notes published in 1657: Select Observations on English Bodies. The Garden Hall's Croft is set in stunning grounds. Beautiful roses and herbaceous borders line a path leading to a sundial and arbour. An ancient mulberry tree stands proud in the centre of the lawn and there is a formal herbal bed, containing many of the herbs mentioned by John Hall in his medical notes. Outdoor Plays Hall's Croft hosts outdoor plays from time to time. Please visit the outdoor plays page for more information. |

Hall's Croft is currently awaiting a major restoration programme. The house has experienced a long history of structural movement and it is essential that long term stability is brought to the building, and in particular the damaging effect of the present roof loading is addressed. The work will also include a re-presentation of the house with many exciting new displays and previously closed areas being opened to the public.
