The physical condition of any document, book, map or illustration and its preservation for the future is out foremost concern. Consequently copying can be carried out only if there is no risk or damage to the original, and providing also that there will be no infringement of copyright law.

We also offer Photographic Services.

PHOTOCOPIES

Same size and enlarged copies of original material are available up to a maximum finished size of A3. All copying is done by staff but can only be done on demand during quiet periods. Otherwise copying is carried out at 1.30pm and 4.00pm. Copying which cannot be done during a reader visit will be kept for collection with a deposit of £1.00, or, if paid for in advance, sent by post. If required, a low-resolution scan can sometimes be provided and sent electronically.

We reserve the right to refuse to copy any item in our collections where there is an unacceptable risk of damage.

Restrictions on Photocopying
The following types of material cannot normally be photocopied:

  1. an alternative exists to copy from, i.e. microfilm, photograph or other copy
  2. bound items printed in 1800 or earlier
  3. books with a tight binding
  4. any item larger than A3
  5. any item with brittle, torn or fragile parts
  6. books too heavy to be turned upside down
  7. items tightly rolled
  8. a second or subsequent sheet of a document which cannot be removed from its attachments
  9. a fold-out which is larger than its covers
  10. a coloured manuscript item
 MICROFILM AND MICROFICHE
If a document is available on microfilm/microfiche, then a copy will be taken from this, and will take at least one working day. Copies can be kept for collection with a £1.00 deposit, or, if paid for in advance, sent by post.

COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

You are reminded that all copies are supplied for non-commercial private study or use and that publication or further reproduction in any form requires permission from the Head of Library and Information Resources. A reproduction fee may be charged in addition to the copying cost.

Prompt books and other unpublished manuscripts will be copied only on completion of a declaration form (PDF) .

Manuscript music and some other restricted materials may not be copied without specific permission from the copyright-holder.

No more than 5% of any published item still within copyright may be photocopied.

Surcharges
The Shakespeare Centre Library will charge a £30.00 research fee for any commercial work carried out by its staff which takes over 30 minutes, including the identification of materials (photographs, documents, books, etc.) for copying. For non-commercial research a £10.00 fee applies under the same conditions.
