Main files of RSC productions

These are full-size photographs, ideal for personal study, but the copyright on them is rarely owned by the RSC or the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Photographic prints and permission to publish must be sought from the copyright-holder, usually the photographer.

Angus McBean Collection

Between 1945 and 1962 Angus McBean was the SMT/RSC's leading photographer. The Library& Archive holds files of full-size prints for reading room use as well as around 1500 signed display photographs, all of which are available in surrogate form in order to protect the originals. Many of England's leading actors of the time are represented in this collection including Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud. The copyright on these photographs resides with the RSC and is administered by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

Reg Wilson Collection,1961-1997

Macbeth, Royal Shakespeare Theatre 1977, The Banquet scene, with Ian McKellen as Macbeth and Judi Dench as Lady Macbeth. (The Thos.F. and Mig Holte Collection)Acquired by the RSC with the aid of a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund this covers over 200 productions. These include non-Shakespeare plays, London productions and many are in colour. Copyright resides with the RSC, administered by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

 

 

Tom Holte Theatre Photographic Collection and Thos. F. and Mig Holte Collection

Covers most Stratford productions from 1952 to 1983 on colour slides and black and white prints, with some colour prints taken by Mig Holte 1973 to 1983. Copyright Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

Malcolm Davies photographs

From 1992 most Stratford productions, and some in London, have been recorded by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust's staff photographer in both black and white prints and colour slides. Copyright Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.
