Applying to Use the Library & ArchiveOn their first visit readers will be asked to produce proof of identity with address and signature, and will then be issued with a Reader's Ticket. The signature of a referee or letter of introduction from a referee is required for readers wishing to use special collections items, e.g. books printed before 1700. A form of application maybe completed beforehand - Application for a Reader's TicketSubsequently readers must show their Reader's Ticket and sign the Visitors Book on each visit.
How to Find and Order What You WantAdvance requests for the reservation of material may be made by post, fax or email. When in the Reading Room a request slip should be completed for each item from the Library & Archive. Reading Room ItemsItems marked Reading Room do not require slips, as they are available on the open shelves in the Reading Room. Please ask staff on duty for help if necessary. Books and PeriodicalsRSC Archive MaterialsPhotographs, newscuttings, videos and other production records are partly listed in the Trust's online Catalogue of Archives. The RSC's productions are indexed on the RSC Performance Database online. Search by play title, year or venue as well as name of actor, director, etc.
Videos/DVDsReaders may reserve videos for use in the Library & Archive video viewing room. Contact us first to book viewing. The Library & Archive charges a modest facilities fee for viewing video material in its collections. £3 (inc. VAT) for for a half day session of 3.5 hours or £6 (inc. VAT) for a whole day The charge is be waived for students required to study these materials as part of their course work, on production of their student card.
Microfiche/microfilmCD-ROMSA selection is available for use on one of the workstations in the Catalogue Room. A list is available. Please ask staff on duty for the CD you require. Other items/collectionsSeparate descriptive lists are available in the Library & Archive for the Bram Stoker Collection, for CD-ROMS, and for costume designs, music, etc. Bibliographies on many popular Shakespeare-related subjects are also available. See Research Materials. Guidelines for use of the Library & Archive Lockers are provided for outdoor coats and bags which may not be taken into the Reading Room. Request slips must be completed for every item ordered from the strongrooms. Normally not more than four items will be supplied to a single reader at any one time. Reader's tickets must be surrendered when library or archive materials are supplied. All library and archive materials should be returned in person to staff on duty. No materials may be removed from the Reading Room. Only pencils may be used in the Reading Room. Marks must not be made in books or archives. Archival gloves must be worn when handling photographic material. When necessary, readers must use book/document rests and weights as provided in the reading room. Use of other objects to support Library & Archive materials is not permitted. Readers must not lean on books or documents or rest papers or notebooks on them. Talking in the Reading Room must be kept to a minimum for the convenience of other readers. Mobile telephones and personal stereos should be switched off. Food and drink are not permitted in the Reading Room or study rooms. Tea and coffee are available to buy in the common room upstairs at 10am-12pm and 2:30-4:30pm. Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the building. Laptops may be used in the Reading Room. Please ask a member of staff For security CCTV cameras are in operation in the Reading Room.
