SBT Seeks New Trustee

Rare vacancy for Trustee to join Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Board

17 February 2014

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is seeking a Trustee to join its 31-strong Board which governs the charity that cares for the world’s greatest Shakespeare heritage sites and collections in Stratford-upon-Avon, and promotes the enjoyment and understanding of Shakespeare all over the world.

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is a unique charity with a governance structure enshrined by an Act of Parliament which sets out its responsibilities to promote the appreciation of Shakespeare’s works worldwide, and to manage the five Shakespeare family homes and the world-class library and archive based in Stratford for the benefit of the nation.  Trustee vacancies are rare (the majority of the Trustee Board comprises representatives from nominating organisations), and this is an opportunity for someone with expertise either in the fields of charity governance and legal affairs or in the commercial retail and catering sector.  The role is voluntary and expenses are reimbursed.

Dr Diana Owen, Director of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, said, “The Trust is a singular charity with an extraordinary, multi-faceted remit.  We employ more than 200 people and engage some 400 volunteers in an astonishing range of disciplines to bring more than 800,000 visitors a year to the Shakespeare homes in Stratford, contributing more than £40m to the regional economy. The Trust is also the headquarters of the International Shakespeare Association, and our learning programmes and digital platforms reach out to people on every continent.

“The great diversity of our work means the Trust needs a broad range of skills and experience, and we regularly review the skills mix of the Board. I would encourage everyone who is interested in this position to get in touch. We are at the start of a three year anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth and death from 2014 – 2016 and there is no better time to be joining our Board.”
